Journalist Alasdair Gold says that Tottenham Hotspur are unlikely to sign a free agent to cover for the absences of Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min, per a Football.London Q&A (February 26th, 18:26).
What’s he said?
Spurs are without a senior striking option following injuries to the pair, though they face a busy end to the season as they attempt to qualify for the Champions League and keep fighting in Europe’s premier competition and continue to progress in the FA Cup.
Gold, who covers Spurs, was asked about the feasibility of the club making a signing outside of the regular transfer window.
He has, though, outlined two reasons why it is so unlikely.
He said: “There’s a problem with free agents.
Money talks: How much did Levy pay for each of these Spurs stars?
“Firstly if they’re still free agents a month after the transfer window closed then there’s probably a reason for that.
“Also by the time you’d get a free agent signing fit enough to play in the Premier League, Harry Kane or Son would likely be back.”
He added: “I get the impression that they will continue with Lucas, Bergwijn, Lamela and Dele Alli rotating during games in the most advanced role.”
Boat has sailed
Spurs should have done this in January.
They had the opportunity to bring in a striker and attempted to do exactly that.
Per Football FanCast sources, they were interested in Real Sociedad’s Willian Jose, Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud, and AC Milan Krzysztof Piatek.
No deal, of course, came to fruition, with Piatek eventually moving to Hertha Berlin instead, and Spurs are now left remarkably thin up top.
Troy Parrott is the only out-and-out option and he is only 17, with just two games of senior football under his belt.
Gold is right that bringing in a free agent seems an unlikely fix for Spurs but one has to make the point that the boat has sailed and is well into open waters by now.
Meanwhile, Andros Townsend has hailed one former Spurs man!
