Manchester United Jose Mourinho has targeted a thinly-veiled dig at his predecessor Louis van Gaal in relation to David de Gea’s award last season.
The Spanish goalkeeper, who is widely regarded as one of the world’s best in his position, picked up the club’s Player of the Year gong at the end of last season.
The campaign itself was a mixed one for the Red Devils as they managed to clinch the FA Cup, but finished fifth in the Premier League, missing out on a Champions League spot.
Van Gaal was sent packing shortly after United’s cup win, and Mourinho was installed as his replacement in the summer.

The Portuguese coach has not had the easiest start to life at Old Trafford due to a number of unwelcome results pushing the club down to sixth, 10 points adrift of league leaders Chelsea.
The tide seems to be turning, though, as United have won their last seven games heading into this weekend’s FA Cup third-round tie against Reading on Saturday.
During Friday’s press conference, where he confirmed that Sergio Romero will replace De Gea in goal, Mourinho had some words to say about his number one.
“I think when a goalkeeper is the player of the season it means something is wrong. I would love my goalkeeper to win the golden glove, they are lonely guys at one end of the field.”
