Real Betis' Antony has revealed that he was 'very close' to joining Liverpool as Mohamed Salah's replacement before he signed for Manchester United.

Antony burst onto the scene at Ajax as a talented winger and had many clubs interested in signing him in the summer of 2022, including Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Barcelona, among others. However, Antony decided to follow Erik ten Hag to Old Trafford, a move that has not worked out very well for either party.

After his constant struggles at United, Antony had his tipping point under Ruben Amorim a few months ago and left the Red Devils on a six-month loan to Betis, where he has finally regained his form. However, the Brazilian has now revealed that his journey could have been a lot different as he revealed that he had almost joined Liverpool in 2022 as Salah's replacement.

Speaking to , Antony said a deal was in the works, but Salah signed a contract extension, putting an end to the Reds' need for the ex-Sao Paulo star.
“It's true," he said. "I was very close to signing for Liverpool, but nobody knows what would have happened. In the end, I went to Manchester United, I lived great moments there and it was a good choice too. Salah is an incredible player and he has been doing extraordinary things for a long time. He is an exceptional footballer. I don't know if he is the best in the world at the moment, but he is certainly among the best and is seriously competing for the Ballon d'Or.”
WHAT NEXT FOR ANTONY?
Antony had his low point at Real Betis when he was sent off against Getafe and was set to be out for the clash against Real Madrid on Saturday. However, after seeing his red card rescinded, Antony expressed his happiness: “It was incredible for me, especially because of the importance of this match against Real Madrid. Also, we are playing at home and in front of our fans. I am very happy and ready for this match."
